An Early Guide To The 2006 World Series Of Poker

Daniel Kline asked:

Welcome to the poker betting column. Every week we will be analyzing recent player performances, the betting market and predicting future winners. Hopefully this column helps you make more informed bets, increases your edge and chances of poker betting success. It truly is a market where knowledge is money.

Today, an overview of the upcoming World Series of Poker and a few points to remember when making your picks.

The 2006 World Series of Poker is quickly approaching with an expected first-place prize of $10 million. Of course, that winner is going to have to battle through a grueling week of flush draws, open enders, 2 outers, cold decks and hot streaks. It will be a mental and physical roller coaster, testing a combination of skill, stamina, guts and luck.

Almost all sportsbooks will be offering lines on the ‘winner’ market. Obviously this is the hardest pick to make, and therefore I’d advise choosing a few long shots rather than any top-ranked player. There is clearly little value backing Phil Ivey at 125 – 1 or even Dave Colcough at 80-1!! Not only are these terrible prices to begin with, but also the players may not even be on form or running well in and around the tournament. It’s always important to track each player’s recent performances when gauging their chances of success.

Poker players are a lot like horses in that recent form plays a huge part in how they perform. The best player in the world cannot beat cold decks or bad luck, and therefore running well is essential to having a real shot at winning. The five most important factors to consider when making your picks are: 1) Recent form – running well vs. being cold decked. 2) Hunger to win – any recent close wins fuel players’ desire to win the next event they enter. 3) Skill/experience level – Players must be able to compete at the highest levels or at least have the guts to gamble. 4) Age – As the main event is expected to take nine days to complete (though there are multiple Day 1’s and 2’s), players must be physically and mentally fit, able to stay sharp throughout. Fatigue causes mistakes, and mistakes cost you tournaments. 5) Style of play – Weak/ tight vs. tight/aggressive.

Here is a breakdown of those factors:

1. Recent Form: This is a key topic when analyzing the market and making your picks. Therefore, it is worth waiting until the last couple of days before the event to place your bets. We all know Ivey is widely regarded as the best player in the world, but even he will need to be focused and running well to win WSOP 2006. If he is too fatigued from the preliminary events and side action, then he will not be a serious contender.

2. Hunger to Win: Due to the volume of players entering the main event, competitiveness and hunger to win will play a vital role in players’ chances of success. For example, a player who simply wants to go deep and cash out is limiting his or her success level as opposed to the player who is playing to win. Even though the tournament cannot be won in a single day, players still need to be pushing every edge they can, staying sharp throughout, picking up every possible chip. With so many chips in play, chip accumulation is vital – every day. Waiting for aces will not work. Remember, it is much easier to dominate the action at a table when you hold a large chip advantage, and if players can combine a large chip advantage with superior skill, there will be little that stands in the way of success, particularly if they are running well too!

3. Skill / Experience: Due to the volume of entrants, and the grueling nine-day schedule, skill and experience will be vital to staying alive in the tournament. Even though Chris Moneymaker miraculously won in 2003 with little to no experience, it is worth remembering that the field was less than 1,000 players then, as opposed to 6,500-plus this year. Therefore, players lacking in skill and experience will need to get lucky many more times than Moneymaker did. There are simply too many skilled players and chips in play for an unskilled newbie to cruise to victory. However, with the increased popularity in online poker, many young players have the skill and experience to compete against the older brick and mortar veterans – though any additional live experience Internet players have will be invaluable as many top online players fail to make the correct adjustments for live play. It’s a lot easier to pull off a stone-cold bluff online than it is face to face!

4. Age: Again because of the schedule and necessity for mental and physical fitness, many of the great, experienced veterans will find it difficult to stay in contention throughout the main event. At the same time, an overly aggressive youngster lacking in experience may blow up too early after having dominated the action early on. So both ends of the age spectrum can be advantageous and disadvantageous – the key being to find the right balance and mental psyche in your player picks.

5. Style of play: Players will need to accumulate as many chips as possible at every opportunity while also avoiding the risk of elimination. Therefore a weak/tight strategy will not be successful. Tight, aggressive play will win this tournament and crown the new champion. (Be careful not to confuse fearlessness with recklessness when analyzing players).

Good luck everybody, both playing and betting this week!

Nintendo Ds Top Games: World Series of Poker 2008

michelle strait asked:

I almost didn’t buy “World Series of Poker 2008: Battle for the Bracelets”. When it comes to Nintendo DS top games, there usually isn’t a casino game in the bunch. Why, you ask? It’s because most casino games are disappointing. This is not a casino game, but I figured it would be more of the same. Thankfully, I was wrong. This game is a union of portable gaming and poker that actually delivers the goods.

World Series of Poker (WSOP) in Your Home

The Nintendo DS version of World Series of Poker is based on the famous World Series of Poker (WSOP) tournament. Hundreds of poker players compete for a seat at the final table, with dreams of winning big bucks and a coveted gold WSOP bracelet.

Just like in real life, the game allows you to play against virtual versions of some of the top poker players. Annie Duke, Jennifer Tilly, Johnny Chan, and Phil Hellmuth are a few of the top poker players in the game.

Playing World Series of Poker 2008 for the Nintendo DS

The object of the game is to become a champion Texas Hold Em player. You reach the top by squashing your competition and winning all the tournaments.

Unless you’re great at Texas Hold Em, you’ll spend more time starting over than gloating over your victory. I’m not that good at Texas Hold Em, and you can tell by the number of times I go bust in this game.

There are different modes of play in the game. If you’re successful in Career Mode, you’ll eventually reach the main event. The main event in the game is like the final table in the real life tournament. I’ve never made it that far, so good luck to you.

After you have a few wins under your belt, professional players begin inviting you to various Vegas casinos for cash games. And there’s also a heads-up option where you compete one-on-on against six professional players. When you manage to beat all six of them, you face Phil Hellmuth. I’ve also never made it this far, so once again, good luck to you.

Playing Options

In addition to career mode, there are quick play and multiplayer options.

Quick play allows you to play short games without affecting any games saved in career mode. So if you’ve kicked **** in career mode, but tank during quick play, your career mode rating remains intact. And the quick play option lets you play with others nearby using a Wi-Fi connection.

Quick play is fun because you can customize your game. You can choose the number of players, pros or amateurs, starting cash, limit or no limit game, blinds, and location.

The Downside: Limited Poker Variations

If you’re looking to play poker games other than Texas Hold Em, this isn’t the game for you.

There are plenty of poker variations, but this particular game only includes Texas Hold Em. To play games such as Omaha or Stud, check out World Championship Poker, which is another good selection.

World Series of Poker 2008 also includes a helpful training option. This is great for people unfamiliar with poker, but who want to learn the game. Phil’s Poker School is a tutorial narrated by poker professional Phil Hellmuth. While you play a hand on the bottom screen, the top screen has a video of Phil Hellmuth giving you instructions.

In-Game Options

Other options under training include Same Hand Jam, which let’s you pick two hole cards (your starting cards) and play nine rounds with them. There’s also poker hand rankings and a Texas Hold Em guide.

Overall Rating: Five Poker Chips

I recommend World Series of Poker 2008 for poker players who love Texas Hold Em. The lack of game variation was a bit disappointing, but the superior training section made up for it. Overall, this game deserves a spot with other Nintendo DS top games.

Basketball players are sequoia people. Football players are triceratops and soccer players are gazelles. Baseball players have rifles extending from their shoulders. While you do have to work hard to join the ranks of professional athletes, the truth of the matter is that you have to be born lucky first.

The poker table is not so selective. There is no shape that the poker player must first fill to succeed. All types of people afflicted with conditions from manic depression to blindness have found themselves ahead at the poker table in major competition. Here are four of their stories.

Hal Lubarsky

Hal Lubarsky was born in Brooklyn, New York with a time bomb in his eyes. Hal was born with a genetic disorder called retinitis pigmentosa which causes the gradual deterioration of the retinas and eventually, complete blindness. Like most boys born in Brooklyn, Hal played poker. But unlike the other boys, Hal made money – Hal made a lot of money. In fact, at the age of 29, Hal moved to Las Vegas and became a professional poker player. He would find tremendous success playing in the $150/$300 H.O.R.S.E. games and became a fixture at many of the other top games in Las Vegas.

Then, in the late 90s, the genetic disorder which had remained relatively dormant, caught fire. Within six months of noticing a tunneling in his vision, Hal was asking dealers to read the cards on the board to him. Finally, by 2000, Hal was no longer able to read his own cards.

Hal battled with depression as he struggled to find a way back into the world he loved. He tried internet games with friends present to announce both the community cards and his own hole cards. But Hal found the action to be too high-paced especially with the demands placed on his readers. So after a lifetime and career in poker, Hal was unable to see a future in cards.

Then came a breakthrough. After experimenting with live aids, or “card-callers”, Hal Lubarsky finagled his way into the 2007 WSOP Main Event. While just about every other player showed up with the $10,000 buy-in and was given a seat, Hal was forced to dangle discrimination litigation over reticent tournament officials.

Officials relented and allowed Lubarsky to enter along with a card caller who would whisper Hal’s cards into his ear as well as announce the board. 6,358 players entered the same tournament Hal did. This field included the most successful and celebrated players in the world and represented the second largest tournament in history. To win the 2007 WSOP Main Event would take almost a week of playing poker for more than 12 hours per day, to make the money one would have to outlast more than 5,500 other players and finish in the top 621.

Hal did not win the 2007 WSOP Main Event – amateur player and psychologist Jerry Yang took home the $8.25 million first prize. At 5:17 pm on July 13, 2007 Hal Lubarsky lost the last of his chips in the 2007 WSOP Main Event. But Hal finished in 196th place and took home more than $51,000. He outlasted poker greats Doyle Brunson, Phil Hellmuth and Johnny Chan along with 6,162 other players. Hal is now playing regularly in high stakes games in Las Vegas once again.

Dutch Boyd

By all accounts, Russ “Dutch” Boyd is a genius. Dutch was born in 1980 and began attending college at 12 years old. By 18, he had graduated law school and by the age of 20 he had co-founded one of the first online poker rooms, PokerSpot. Dutch is also a diagnosed and medicated manic depressive.

After an ignoble end to PokerSpot, Dutch spearheaded a group of young poker players calling themselves “The Crew”. This group includes pros Scott Fischman, David Smyth, Tony Lazar, Brett Jungblut and has accounted for 4 WSOP bracelets and 2 WPT championships to date. They burst onto the scene in the 2003 WSOP on the heels of Dutch’s 12th place finish in the Main Event (and if it weren’t for an unbelievable call by Chris Moneymaker, he could have finished much higher.) He followed that impressive performance up by finishing 2nd to TJ Cloutier in the 2004 WSOP Razz tournament and eventually winning a coveted WSOP bracelet in 2006. Along the way, he struggled with his sanity.

Boyd would hole up in his home for days on end, sure that external forces were threatening his life. As is the case with most people afflicted with the mental disorder, Dutch had a lot of good days and would hit the poker tables when he was able.

But most days were not good days. Rather than face the public ridicule associated with being a “schizo”, Boyd hid his condition and became withdrawn. On those occasions when he would make public appearances, he often appeared frantic and weirdly enamored with bodily functions. He infamously interrupted a television interview with Mike Matusow to ask if “The Mouth” had ever drank his own urine… and then took a drink from a suspiciously colored Sprite bottle. Boyd’s game suffered and despite repeatedly buying into tournaments for as much $10,000 a piece he wouldn’t make more than $46,000 in a tournament for 3 years.

In 2006, Dutch Boyd publically acknowledged on his official website what many of those closest to him already knew, that he suffered from manic depression. That year, he would win his biggest tournament and $475,712 by coming in first at the WSOP Short Handed NL Hold’em tournament. He has since won more than $400,000 with his most recent victory coming in late November of 2007 at the WPT Bellagio Five Diamond Poker Classic. Despite his many ups and downs, Dutch is still only 27 years old.

Internet Poker - Taking Cash Games To A Whole New Level

Thursday, January 10th, 2008

Sean Moronse asked:

Internet poker has gone to a whole new level. Never before have over 3 million people at the SAME TIME online. With 3 million people playing poker online, there comes horrible players with lots of money to be won.

With the surge of online poker, I am able to make a killing online with minimal efforts. When you sit in a poker room you need to be aware of your surroundings and competition at the table. Before sitting down in a cash game online, you need to study the competition at the table. Who has the most poker chips, who plays the most poker hands, and who is currently on tilt. Finding a player in a cash game that is on tilt will generate some huge profits. Being a poker pro will give you discipline and allow you to walk away if you suffer a bad beat. Here is my suggestions when you suffer a bad beat which will save you thousands of dollars per month or per year depending on how much you play.

1. If you suffer a bad beat the first thing you need to do is accept your losses and shake it off

2. Shut down your computer IMMEDIATELY hitting the power button

3. Take an hour break, two hour break, or a week break

4. Come back fresh and a few days later and that bad beat will not even be in your head anymore

If you ever want to win the world series of poker or the world poker tour, using this strategy will get you a long way accept for when playing in person you just have to walk away and come back. Take a breather, go get a drink, and shake off the loss. If you play great you will get rewarded in the long run, while the idiots out there will lose all their money.

Now when starting out, most people ask which poker site is the best? I highly recommend starting out especially if you’re a US citizen on poker stars or full tilt poker. Full tilt poker and poker stars offer a 100% deposit bonus on your first deposit. So initially you deposit 100 dollars, you have 200 dollars to work with! I would take this 200 dollars and start building my bankroll. Bankroll management will be the key to your success. Your bankroll should be treated as if it was your own child. You need to take care of it and NEVER lose it. Once you deposit real money for the first time, please make it your last. With the proper bankroll management you can make a stable income playing cash games online in no time. One thing you always need to remember is playing real money is totally different than playing for play money. People just don’t care in play money games. The only way to truly get a feel of online poker is to play for real money. Even starting out in the .05/.10 cash games is okay! In whatever you decide to do, I wish you the best of luck.
